To avoid severe withdrawal symptoms, your doctor will likely wean you off Xanax slowly. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider before stopping the drug. Also, let your doctor know if you notice any bothersome symptoms after stopping Xanax.

2. Before you go to sleep at night, and when you wake up in the morning focus on what you want in the positive tense for 5 minutes. Anxious people rarely take time to focus on what they DO want, and usually focus on what they DONT want.
3. Do something social everyday- even if its something small. Talk to the clerk at the gas station, the barista at starbucks, or a coworker.
4. Instead of feeling your emotions, try to view them. Imagine you talking all your anxious thoughts out to yoruself, and your sitting infront of you listening. Tell yourself its okay to be nervous.
5. Keep a list of all the nervous thoughts you have throughout the day. Then at the end of each day put a checkmark next to every negative thought or prediction that actually occurred. You will learn that 90% of what you worry about never comes to pass.
6. Stay away from symptom lists online. Its okay to read a couple to diagnose yourself, but do not start to identify yourself as an anxious person. You will learn more about this in the REBT information.

If you arent able to take control of your thoughts yet look into medication for anxiety. A class of drugs called benzodiazepines is used to treat all major anxiety disorders. This may be the best route for people experiencing severe anxiety that need immediate treatment.

Social Anxiety Disorder

This is a form of incorrect thinking which usually learned from a parent or parental figure from an early age. Because we humans are mostly the result of our early childhood these fears can become etched into the brain as default behaviors, causing a person to live a nervous and unfulfilled life.

While social anxiety disorder is commonly linked to other disorders such as depression, obsessive compulsive disoder, and and panic disorder- it can also be experienced as a single condition. Some common fears amoung those affected include;

• fear of answering the phone (what will I say? what if they are in a good mood and I just bring them down? what if they dont like me or judge me?)
• being watched over or looked at by people (what are they thinking about me? are they thinking bad things about me? did I make a mistake? I have to look cool, together, friendly, etc…)
• asking questions in public (people will think im dumb, people wont like me)
• eating or drinking food in front of other people (what if I have food in my teeth? are they judging me?)

Most anxiety is caused by your own thinking, but we humans are animals and instantly react to our thoughts with emotions. This reaction happens so fast sometimes it slips under the radar and we dont realize it. Some symptoms of soxial anxiety disorder;

• Extremely anxious in social situations
• Avoidance of social situations
• Negative mental predictions of social situations
• Confusion, heart pounding, short breaths, sweating, shaking, blushing, cold sweating, upset stomach, racing mind

Many people who experience these extreme symptoms of anxiety find it hard to even leave their own home.
