Panic attacks are very sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety, mounting physiological arousal, fear, stomach problems and discomfort. Most panic attacks are caused by an overactive nervous system, a person being hypersensitive to external surroundings. These panic attacks are sudden, and caused by an activation of the fight or flight response. This response floods our brains with hormones telling us to run away, or stay and fight.
Studies show panic attack symptoms last about 30 minutes, but usually end sooner. Most panic attacks are the result of anticipatory anxiety, meaning basically an extremely overactive imagination. People suffering from panic attacks often visualize horrible situations playing out in their head as if they are really going to occur.
Panic attacks are commonly linked to agoraphobia and social anxiety and the fear of not being able to escape a bad situation. Many who experience panic attacks feel trapped and unable to free themselves. Xanax is a benzodiazepine similar to valium that treats panic attacks and generalized anxiety.
